How will the competition be judged?

There will be three phases for the judging.

First, all portraits entered into the competition will be looked at by The Click Group’s artistic team who will select the best 250. These will then be uploaded to the gallery page of the website by the end of September 2019.

The public will then be invited to vote for their favourites, to help us find a shortlist of 50.

If your image is selected as a finalist we’ll email you and your photographer to let you both know. You can then spread the word – on and offline – to try and get your portrait as many votes as possible and make the top 50.

Once the votes are in, the shortlist will be judged by a panel of internationally renowned dog photographers and representatives from the partner charities. They will decide on the overall winner and the two runners up.

What are the judges looking for?

Our expert judging panel will be looking for a number of things.

As well as great photographic craft such as composition, attention to detail, colour and vibrancy, we’ll be looking at how your photographer captures the dog themselves. Pose and expression will be key, as will be the set and backdrop. We want to see an image that depicts the personality and breed of that dog perfectly.

All art forms are subjective, of course, but we expect the winning image to be of a calibre that could happily adorn the cover of a canine publication, whilst having clear commercial appeal.
